Three new roasteries have opened in Reykjavík in the past year. A young, well-travelled population, volcanic water designed for pour-over, and a culture that has always taken its coffee seriously. The city of 130,000 now has more specialty cafés per capita than most European capitals.
A major chain’s decision to sell espresso at $1 has reignited the argument: does cheap coffee devalue the craft or democratise it? Specialty baristas on one side. Economists on the other. Both have a point.
Iceland’s water is soft, low in minerals, and almost entirely free of chlorine — close to ideal for pour-over brewing. It doesn’t compete with the coffee’s own flavour compounds. Most specialty roasters worldwide would pay dearly for it. It comes out of your tap.
The world’s oldest coffee-growing region is reclaiming its seat at the specialty table. Yemeni coffee has a wild, wine-like complexity from ancient heirloom varieties and traditional natural processing. Rare, expensive, and unlike anything else.
Slow piano and ambient synths for very late nights. Delicate and unhurried — a light Ethiopian pour-over matches exactly. Make both slowly. Don’t use a timer.
Gritty 1960s jazz from YouTube’s shadow archive. Loud, imperfect, temperamental — like a moka pot at 7am.
A Norse-mythological coffee-fantasy universe. Echonut the squirrel superhero and Svadilpuff the Wizard Puffin — navigating the nine coffee realms. New episodes as the saga unfolds.
The Roasted Mountains smelled of dark roast and ancient magic. Echonut landed on a ridge of compacted coffee grounds and scanned the horizon with his acorn-shaped binoculars.
The Espresso Rune was gone. A circle of scorched espresso crema where it had rested for eleven hundred years. The other realms wouldn’t notice for a day or two — but after that, the cold would start.
“You look like someone who has lost something very important,” said a voice from behind a volcanic boulder.
Perched on the rock, wearing a cloak covered in tiny golden runes and holding a Chemex filled with glowing liquid, was the largest puffin he had ever seen.
“Svadilpuff,” the puffin said. “Wizard. I know where the Rune is. I won’t tell you for free — but I’ll trade the information for a story and a decent cup of coffee. I’ll provide the latter. You provide the former.”
Echonut sat down on the warm volcanic ground. This was going to take a while. He was already looking forward to it.
The latte art had been there for three hundred years — magical foam, rune-carved, smelling faintly of cinnamon and destiny.
“You have small clever hands,” Svadilpuff observed.
“I am a squirrel,” Echonut said flatly. “All squirrels have small clever hands.”
Echonut looked at the portafilter. The portafilter looked back.
“Fine. But if I pull a good flat white, we split the prophecy credit fifty-fifty.”
Svadilpuff’s eyes gleamed. “Sixty-forty. I found the prophecy.”
“Deal.”
Before the nine realms, there was only the Bean. Green, unroasted, full of potential energy and mild vegetable flavour.
Then the first heat came. The Bean cracked. Twice. And from those two cracks — the first crack and the second crack — the nine realms came into being. Espressheim. Filturia. The Dark Roast Realms. Aeropress Gate. Kaffivalhöll itself.
Echonut arrived completely by accident — falling through a portal that turned out to be a particularly well-extracted ristretto, landing headfirst outside Kaffivalhöll’s gates.
The gates were engraved with the ancient motto of the Brewyverse: “Extract well. Waste nothing. Share the good cup.”
Echonut had never felt more at home. And he hadn’t even had his first sip yet.
